Custom Trumpet Turkey Calls

Greg Gwaltney, owner of Gwaltney Game Calls carefully crafts a trumpet turkey call in his home shop.

My father introduced me to the outdoors and hunting as a young boy, due to my interest, we hunted together for 50+ years. Some of my greatest memories were made in those days, I fortunately have been able to share the same activities with my boys. I also had a love for woodworking, this led me to luthiery (acoustic guitar building) as well as turkey call building. I have a pretty decent ear for tuning my guitars, and always enjoyed trying to seek out the most tonal character in the instruments. Now I use those same skills to craft my trumpets.

Precision is the name of the game, and that challenge interests me. Turning trumpets happens to be my real passion. The intricacies, variables, precision, and attention to detail require a focus that I’m drawn to. It is always fascinating to hear the differences wood choices make in the final tone & playability of a trumpet, not to mention the innate beauty each unique wood species brings to the call. I am a bit of a wood junky, so sourcing and buying unique wood blanks is an ongoing affair, everyone loves a call that looks good too. While looks are important, sound and tone are the name of the game,  I have spent countless hours developing and refining my trumpet “recipes” to bring the best to the those who trust me with their purchases.

My experience building guitars taught me the incredible importance of proper wood storage, I therefore have a humidity controlled room for all wood before turning blanks into a trumpet, another step toward creating a quality product. Please know that I care a great deal about the calls I create and will never send one out the door until it is perfect in my eyes. I want to thank you for stopping by to learn more about me and my trumpets. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that may arise.

“Greg’s trumpets check all the boxes; Beauty, sound, easy to play and pride of ownership.  And he’s just a great guy to do business with.  Thanks Greg for an excellent trumpet.” — Jonathan
